Daniel Briggs
Daniel Briggs searches northern China for
functional and elegant examples of traditional antique Chinese
furniture. The collection is focused on pieces that exhibit
simplicity of construction and the lustrous patina that comes from many
years of use.
In the past few years Shanxi Province provided most
of the treasures on the market. Daniel has admired those pieces
for their thick coats of lacquer and the beauty of elmwood. More
recently the pieces coming out of Gansu Province have interested him.
These pieces were mostly made of a Chinese species of walnut that, like
elm, is not a hardwood but ages well. Additional searches into
Southeast Asia have uncovered precious Buddhist sculpture from Burma,
Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia for the Daniel Briggs collection.
