Surfaces
After many successful years of glazing and faux-finishing on the west
coast of the United States, David Bonk turned his attention to
wallcoverings and established Surfaces by David Bonk in San Francisco.
Surfaces specializes in complex painted wallpaper designs that are done
entirely by hand. Slight variations within the wallcoverings
visually create the depth and complexity that defines hand painted
finishes.
Paints are applied using a variety of ragging, lifting, strie and
handsilk-screened techniques. The depth of the layers of color
brings to mind the iridescence of Thai silks or aggregate minerals.
In many of the more popular colors, there is a visible difference in the
wallcoverings depending on the time of day, lighting, or the angle from
which it is viewed. Layers of soft rich metallics and the use of
special paints formulated with mica powders create subtle fields of
color and texture. Every inch of the fabric ground is
painted and textured by hand - as many as five times, depending on the
number of layers of design and colors needed to create the desired
effect.
Surfaces couples time-honored painting skills with David's artistic
vision and innovative techniques to create a rich line of hand-crafted
wallcoverings that pique old world sensibilities in a modern market.
David and his staff of skilled artisans create exquisite wallcoverings
for installations from San Francisco to as far away as Singapore.
